Ho, June 15, GNA - Reverend and Mrs David Christensen of United Church of Christ in Connecticut, USA on Friday presented a cheque for 1,000 US dollars to promote formal education in Nkonya and Alavanyo. Making the presentation at Ho, Rev. Christensen said their gesture was in appreciation of the progress and commitment made by the two communities towards restoring peace between them.
He said since 2005 they had followed with keen interest and prayers efforts to restore peace in the communities.
Rev. Christensen said Nkonya and Alavanyo were on the threshold of becoming good models to other communities in Ghana, Africa and the world embroiled in communal conflicts.
He said it was the duty of all and sundry, especially Christians to promote and contribute to peace efforts in the world. "The Evangelical Presbyterian Church and Roman Catholic Church in the Volta Region were executing well by their deep involvement in the peace process in Nkonya and Alavanyo," he added. Rev. Christensen explained that the donation was to support the youth in the two communities who needed to be equipped with knowledge for prosperity.
Togbe Tsedze Atakora VII, Paramount Chief of Alavanyo who received the cheque on behalf of the two communities commended the couple for their personal interest and support for the peace process and formal education in the area.
He gave the assurance that the two communities had reached a stage of "no-return" in their peace process.
Mr Evans Kanfra, Secretary to the Mediation Committee said Government was investing in infrastructure development in Alavanyo and Nkonya in appreciation of progress made towards establishing peace in the area.
Present were Mamaga Ametor III, Queenmother of Alavanyo, Nana Kartey, elder of Nkonya-Ahenkro and Mr Henry Adipa Gyasehene of Nkonya-Kadjebi and representative Nana Okotor Kofi Paramount Chief of Nkonya and representatives of the Consultative Committee and the two churches.
