Regional Campaign Coordinator of the governing NDC, Sylvester Mensah has commended the opposition New Patriotic Party for winning the December general elections.

Mr. Sylvester Mensah who likened the elections to that of the American presidential polls, indicated that although the signs were clear the opposition NPP were leading comfortably, he hoped the tables would turn in their favour.

The NDC Regional Campaign coordinator added that the party got confident because they had performed well in terms of developing the nation, and also was convinced much effort had gone into their campaigns.

“…even when Trump had exceeded the electoral votes that guarantees his victory, I still could not believe that Hillary had lost. I think that it applies in politics and I want to say that in this particular instance it played out very well. We were too confident. We thought we were winning because we had done a very good job; we had campaigned and we couldn’t believe we were losing…. He stated.

“…the numbers were quite clear, the numbers were quite obvious and there were few votes to come. Of course who will not hope that he would win? But the reality is that the NPP won, and they won convincingly and it is quite obvious that they were better organized for this elections. We commend them, we congratulate them, but we’ll stand firm and hold them to their promises. Ghana must move forward…” Mr. Mensah added.

President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo, then NPP Flagbearer polled 5,716,026 to beat incumbent President John Mahama who had 4,713, 277. This was announced by the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Charlotte Osei on December 9th.

The results reflected 53.35% of the total votes gained by Mr. Akufo-Addo as against President Mahama’s 44.40%.

President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo is expected to be inaugurated on January 7, 2017.
