The mother of a 35-year-old man who was, according to the family, beaten to death by police officers at Tafo Pankrono in the Ashanti Region, has said “God will punish” all the police officers who are going about claiming that her son died because he jumped out of his moving car while he was being accompanied to the police station after having been pulled over for alleged reckless driving.

Nana Akua Bemah told Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwa in an exclusive interview on Monday, 8 July 2019 that a five-year-old boy was in the car with her son at the time of the incident has confirmed that indeed, the police officers beat her son to death.

The family of the deceased, 35-year-old Kofi Opoku, on Sunday, 7 July 2019 stormed the Tafo Pankrono Divisional Police Command after the incident amidst claims that the officers pummelled him to death.

According to the family, Opoku was pulled over by the police but refused to stop. Police patrol officers at Tafo-Nhyiaeso then gave him chase.

He was then beaten by the police until he went unresponsive.

The victim was said to have been taken to the Tafo Government Hospital and was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police called for reinforcement after the youth in the area became agitated over the matter.

Nine persons including the deceased’s brother were reportedly arrested.

The family insisted that the police must come clear on the matter.

The deceased left behind a pregnant wife and two children.
