Government has procured 20,000 litter bins to be distributed to the various metropolitan, municipal and districts assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.

The procurement of the bins forms parts of the government’s efforts to eradicate filth in the country, especially, the capital city, Accra.

The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who made the announcement, explained that the government was billed to ensure the country was clean.

Madam Abena Dapaah made the announcement at the coronation of Queen Mother of Owirenkyi Traditional Area in the Assin North District of the Central Region.

The Minister took the opportunity to confer on the President of the Owirenkyi Traditional Council, Ehunabobrem Prah Agyensaim VI, who is also the Chief of Assin Kushea, the ‘Sanitation Ambassador’ for the government’s fight against filth.

He was presented with a citation from the Ministry on behalf of the government. It reads:

“Citation in honour of the Paramount Chief of Owirenkyiman Traditional Area in the Central Region, the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources salute you Ehunabobrem Prah Agyensaim VI, Paramount Chief of Owirenkyi Traditional Area, Central Region. As a traditional Leader, you have brought honour to your traditional area, especially, Assin Kushea in the Central Region of Ghana, as the cleanest town of the Region."

"You have distinguished yourself and bestowed the virtues of cleanliness in the town which is in line with the vision of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to keep Ghana clean. In recognition of this laudable achievement, the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources acknowledges you and bestowed on you this day, 13th July 2019, this special citation as a Sanitation Ambassador to mark your good leadership as a traditional ruler. Thank you”.

Through the efforts of Ehunabobrem Prah Agyensaim VI and his people, Kushea is being touted as the neatest town in Ghana.

Litter bins painted with the colours red, yellow and green have been positioned on the shoulders of the roads and corners of the town every hundred metres.

The community also embarks on clean-up exercises every Wednesday to rid the town of filth.

Pupils have been taught the need to ensure a clean environment and as such act as sanitation police in the town to correct and report anyone who litters.

During the clean-up exercise last Wednesday, economic activities of the town ceased as children and elderly were seen taking part.

Madam Abena Dapaah said the vision of the president is for the people to ensure a clean environment in towns and in their homes, with a special emphasis on the capital city, Accra, to be cleanest across Africa.

She added that the government needed all hands on deck to make the vision of the president a reality and that was why the Ministry decided to confer such an honour on the Chief of Kushea to motivate others.
