Akim Oda, May 27, GNA- Heads of basic schools have been advised to desist from giving cards to pupils to solicit for funds from the public. Chairman of Akim Oda Nkwantanum Mmoakuw, a benevolent society, Mr Francis Appiah Attafuah was speaking at the 15th anniversary celebrations of the society at Akim Oda on Thursday.
He explained that, the practice, apart from tempting the children to steal money from their parents, some could also take advantage of the children and abuse them sexually.
Mr Attafuah said some of the children who are tempted to embezzle the money collected and fearing that they might be punished often refused to go back to school.
He suggested that if there was the need for a school to raise funds for projects, parents should rather be invited to the school to discuss ways of funding the projects instead of sending children to solicit for funds.
The Birim South District Social Welfare Officer, Mr Tetteh Quashie who was the guest speaker, said social groups helped to mobilise human, material and financial resources to put up development projects and also promote sanitation in their communities.
Members of the association spent several hours in a clean-up exercise at the Akim Oda government hospital and later donated a dust bin and ceiling brushes valued at about 1.5 million cedis to the hospital.
The items were presented by Mr Attafuah and were received on behalf of the hospital by Miss Comfort Owusu-Ansah, Deputy Director of Health Services.
