Mother’s Day has always been a big deal in Ghana, with huge expectations from mothers who have for years loved and raised their children.

But we are not in normal times as you are aware. The coronavirus has disrupted almost everything and life as we have known it isn’t the same, at least for now.

Despite the limited options available in this year’s celebrations, individuals are still determined to make the day memorable for their mothers.

Many claim that the usual euphoria that comes with the day wasn't the same.

Notwithstanding, most people took to social media to celebrate their mothers.

GhanaWeb took a trip to the capital of Accra to observe how the day is being celebrated.

According to some people, the ban on public gathering has gotten in the way of their plans as they couldn’t take their parents out on dates.

Just a few people were seen on the streets, and as expected the majority of them had their nose mask on.

The few people who defied the coronavirus scare and took their parents out shared with us how different this year’s celebrations have been, compared to the previous years.

“Due to the coronavirus we couldn’t make our mother happy, we just wished her a Happy Mother’s Day. We could have taken her out on this day,” a young man told GhanaWeb.

“We’ve never taken my mother out on Mother’s Day, my siblings and I planned on taking her out to one of the best restaurants around but due to the Coronavirus, we are not allowed to sit in restaurants. It’s such a big seatback.”

A young man who was out shopping with his wife said, " If really you want to take your mum out, I think this is the time to do so. You just have to follow the safety precautions, wear your face mask, have a sanitizer and you're good to go".

As the world prays and hopes to recover from the scourge of this pandemic, it is not all gloom and doom.

On the brighter side, this pandemic has offered some mothers the opportunity to spend time with their children who might not always be around during the period.

Whether you are in quarantine with your mother or not there are many ways to make her feel loved. You can make her happy with just a simple phone call or leave a heart-warming message.
