Improve journalists' condition – MPs to media owners

MPs have urged media owners in the country to improve the working conditions of their employees.

Contributing to a statement on the floor of parliament as the country joins the rest of the world to celebrate World Press Freedom Day on Friday, 3 May 2019, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the MP for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Abraham Odoom, said journalists in the country are vulnerable due to the poor conditions of service and called on their employers to improve their working conditions.

For his part, the MP for Aowin, Mathias Ntow lamented the lack of retirement packages for journalists in the country, adding that the government must protect journalists in the discharge of their duties diligently.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, in a statement, congratulated journalists for their contribution toward nation-building. He also described as worrying, the current world press freedom index in which Ghana dropped from 23 to 27.

Contributing to the topic, Deputy Communication Minister, Mr George Andah assured the media of the government's commitment toward ensuring their safety and urged them to work without fear or favour.
