Kumasi, May 18, GNA - The authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have appealed to charitable and philanthropic organisations to give more prominence to the donation of medical books that will benefit post-graduate students.
Professor Kwesi Andam, Vice-Chancellor of the University, who made the appeal, said because medical books were expensive, it was quite difficult for many students to have easy access to them.
He made the appeal in Kumasi on Tuesday when the Ghana National Association of Adventists Students (GNAAS), KNUST branch, in conjunction with the General Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church, USA, presented medical books valued at 30 million cedis to the university library.
The 609 medical books included ovulation induction books, quick drug consult for mental health and psychiatric nursing. Professor Andam said the university alone could not provide all the relevant facilities needed to ensure smooth teaching and learning, unless its efforts were complemented with contributions from charitable organisations, individuals and companies.
The Vice-Chancellor also commended the GNAAS for using their extra-curriculum time to organise programmes and activities, which had also helped to bring about peace and harmony on campus. Pastor Israel Nana Tuffour, President of the South Central Ghana Conference of the SDA, who presented the books, said the donation "is our little assistance and we are still working continuously to bring in more books on different subjects to the KNUST".
He urged all students especially those offering medicine to take advantage of the medical books donated to enrich their knowledge. Mrs Asamoah Hassan, the KNUST Librarian, assured the donors that the books would be put into good use and also maintained to ensure that many students benefit from them.
