Kuwaiti government paid for airlifting of deported Ghanaians - Government

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Charles Owiredu has disclosed that the Kuwaiti government paid for the cost of the aircraft that airlifted the 230 Ghanaian returnees who arrived in the country last week.

Addressing a press briefing organised by the Ministry of Information, Mr. Owiredu said the decision to evacuate the returnees was taken by cabinet through a collaboration with the Kuwaiti government.

”As to the cost, let me emphasise that in terms of the cost of the aircraft, them boarding, arriving all that; that cost was borne by the Kuwaiti government. The cost borne by the government of Ghana could be on their arrival, we bought some drinks, food to eat and the cost of quarantine, he explained.

The government granted permission for the deportation of some 230 Ghanaians illegally residing in Kuwait.

The deportees who the National Security has described as returnees arrived in the country last week.

They were conveyed via a chartered flight at the cost of the Kuwaiti government.

The returnees were screened for COVID-19, and later sent into mandatory quarantine when they arrived on Saturday.
