Member of Parliament (MP) for Mfantseman constituency is calling for the urgent construction of speed ramps and pedestrian crossing on the Cape-Coast-Accra Highway.
Ekow Kwansah Hayford said it will help curb the rampant killings of schoolchildren in towns along the highway by speeding vehicles.
His call follows the killing of four schoolchildren by a speeding driver at Egya No. 1, a suburb of Anomabo along the Cape-Coast-Accra Highway.
Another pedestrian, according to reports, is in critical condition at the Saltpond Hospital.
This angered residents who had called for speed ramps for years to block the road until their concerns are met.
Commiserating with residents, the MP blamed the drivers for the incessant deaths on the road.
According to him, drivers plying the Cape-Coast- Accra highway drive above the speed limit resulting in unfortunate deaths.
The MP, who did not back his claim with figures, expressed concern about the fatalities especially at Egya No. 1, 2 and 3.
The driver, who killed the children, he noted, was driving beyond the speed limit without license.
Hayford said he will ensure the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), as a matter of urgency, constructs the speed ramps on the road.
The Mfantseman MP was, however, worried the speed ramp might not solve the problem due to the bad attitude of some drivers who ply the road.
He appealed to the police to check the speed limits of drivers, especially during the yuletide.
