Adankwame (Ash), Oct 21, GNA - School Management Committees (SMCs) have been charged to be proactive and instrumental in the efficient management of basic schools.

Mr Richard Owusu-Agyemang, the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Community Participation Co-ordinator, said the communities should engage in consultations in project management and actively take part in planning, as well as resource mobilisation and empowerment.

He was addressing more than 80 community leaders selected from Adankwame, Esaso and Maabang at a day's workshop organised by the District Education Directorate, with support from the Nwabiagya Rural Bank, at Adankwame at the weekend.

The workshop formed part of the directorate's programme to reactivate dormant SMCs and make them functional.

Mr Owusu-Agyemang said SMCs should play a major part in the regeneration of basic schools to enforce standards and also create partnership among teachers, pupils, communities and the education directorates to bring about the needed reforms in the basic schools. He said the provision of quality education could only be achieved if SMCs were functional, thus providing the requisite leadership support toward school effectiveness.

Mr Stephen Debra Gyasi, the District Education Planning Team (DEPT) Co-ordinator, called on the community leadership to facilitate an exchange of ideas to promote smooth running of basic schools. He advised the SMCs to avoid unnecessary interference in the administration of schools and rather assist school authorities to create conducive atmosphere for effective teaching and learning. Nana Yiadom Boakye, Krontihene of Adankwame, commended the education directorate for organising the workshop and said it has enlightened them on the functions, roles and responsibilities of the SMCs.
