Shop owners close shops at Kyebi to observe anniversary

Kyebi (E/R), March 8, GNA - Almost all shop owners in Kyebi closed their shops and trooped to the Kyebi Ghana Educations Park to participate in the activities marking the 50th independence anniversary. Chiefs and queen mothers from Kyebi and surrounding communities led by the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amotia Ofori Panin, joined teachers, market women, religious organizations, drivers and school children and people from different backgrounds at the parade grounds.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Emmanuel Victor Asihene, the District Director of Education Mrs Ernestina Ofori Afosah- Anim and the Divisional Commander of Police, Chief Superintendent Owiredu Nkansa took the salute.

Over 800 school children, market women, members professional groups holding the national flags and taxi drivers driving their taxi cabs decorated in national colours took part in the march past. Similar parades were held in other eight Town and Area councils in the district in addition to four other towns in the East Akim District.

The East Akim District Director of Education, Mrs Afosan-Anim, said it would take a disciplined youth to confidently take over the leadership mantle and successfully roll the nation on to the centenary celebration of independence.

She appealed to traditional authorities, religious bodies, educationists, community leaders and parents to provide the needed leadership, guidance, education and orientation to the youth. "It is only when the whole country could rises up to its roles and responsibilities that the country can provide the right calibre of people to move the country forward." The District Chief Executive, Mr Asihene, read the President's address.

As part of the activities to mark the anniversary, 19 girls who have to walk for long distances to schools in the district because there are no junior secondary schools (JSS) in their area were presented with bicycles donated by UNESCO.

Tafo CRIG JSS was presented with an award for winning the most environmentally clean school in the district while Osiem Savior Church JSS, Kukurantumi OPASS JSS and Kibi State D/A JSS were presented with awards for winning the first, second and third positions in that order in the environmental quiz that was organized by the District Education Directorate.

In the march past, KITCO Demonstration School won the first position for the primary level and the same position for the JSS level while Abuakwa State College won the first position in the secondary school category.

At the final matches of netball and soccer tournaments organized to mark the anniversary, Adadientem RC JSS beat Kibi D/A Experimental JSS 7-2 to win the Golden Jubilee Netball Trophy while Kibi D/A Experimental Primary beat Adadientem RC Primary 3-0 to lift the Jubilee Soccer Trophy.
