Teacher, 2 others sentenced to 45 years for robbery

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a teacher and two others to a total of 45 years imprisonment in hard labour for robbery.

Bright Amuzu, a pupil teacher, Prosper Howusu and Courage Klutse, both labourers pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and robbery but they were found culpable and sentenced to 15 years each after trial.

Their accomplice, only named as Bello, is currently on the run.

Police Chief Inspector William K. Boateng told the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh that Peter Kwadwo Okyere, the complainant, is a taxi driver living at Kokomlemle, Accra whilst Amuzu lived at Juapong but Howusu and Klutse had no fixed place of abode.

He said 0n March 28, at about 0300 hours, the complainant was in-charge of his Kia Picanto taxi at circle in Accra when Amuzu and Howusu engaged him to drive them to Amrahia near Adenta in Accra.

He said they informed the complainant that the fare would be paid by their brother upon reaching their destination so on reaching Barron First stop on the Adenta- Amarahia road, Klutse who was waiting by the road side boarded the cab and sat at the back.

Chief Inspector Boateng said the three ordered the complainant to drive towards Amrahia Zongo road and when they reached a section of the road near Amrahia ADMA Basic School, Amuzu suddenly hooked the complainant’s neck with a rope against his seat and stabbed him on the left jaw with a screw driver.

The Prosecution said Howusu, who was on the front passenger seat, also pulled a knife and stabbed the complainant on the right thigh and hip, adding that, Amuzu and Klutse pushed Okyere from the cab and Klutse took over the steering wheel.

Chief Inspector Boateng said the three convicts robbed the complainant of the car valued at GH?21,000.00, his Nokia phone valued at GH?100.00 and a cash of GH?250.00.

He said the convicts took the vehicle to their accomplice, one Bello.

The Prosecution said a complaint was made to the police and the vehicle was tracked and retrieved at Ho, but Bello managed to escape.

Chief Inspector Boateng said that on April 1, at about 0500 hours, intelligence gathered indicated that, the three had snatched another car at Adenta and were taking it to Afienya Mataheko for sale, where they were tracked and arrested with the vehicle.

The complainant identified them as those who attacked and robbed him on March 28. They were therefore charged and put before court.
