Two adjudged overall best farmers in Wassa East District

A 54-year old man from Ebukrom, Mr. Ibrahim Mensah and Madam Cecilia Yeboah, 44, from Esamang, were adjudged the overall best farmers in the 2019 Farmers' Day celebration in the Wassa-East District respectively.

Mr. Mensah cultivated 60 acres of cocoa, coconut and oil-palm plantation, plantain, pawpaw, cocoyam, water yam, pepper, agushie and domestic animals such as goats, sheep, and fowls whereas her female counter also cultivated cocoa and oil palm plantation, plantain, Daboase, and other animals.

In all 22 farmers received awards ranging from machetes to bicycles for their outstanding role in Agribusiness culminating in food security and sufficiency.

The District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Kofi Ayiah saluted all farmers in the District for producing enough food to feed the nation.

He observed that most of the farmers over the years have claimed that they deserve awards yet were not located.

Mr. Ayiah reminded such farmers who believe they qualify for awards, to simply liaise with extension officers for their farm locations to be cited for awards.

He prayed that the award winners will not be complacent but put in much effort to maximize production.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Wilson Arthur said the government continues to improve Agriculture to make it more viable and attractive to farmers especially the youth to venture into farming.

He said the government recognizes the contributions farmers make to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and would continue to award a scholarship to school children in the area.

"Government will continue to provide the financial and logistical support to People With Disabilities (PWDs) to make farming more attractive to them", he pledged.

Mr. Arthur paid glowing tribute to Cocobod for donating 125 spraying machines towards the celebration.He also commended the Golden Star Mines for donating two tricycles to the male and female best farmers.

The DCE disclosed that Cocobod is ready to embark upon a District-wide mass spraying exercise, establish a Cocoa factory at Ateiku and open up a Cocoa shed at Daboase all to boost Cocoa production.

He said government had chalked successes in her flagship programmes in planting for food and jobs and planting for exports.

The MP for the area, Mr. Adjei Mensah lauded traditional rulers for spirit behind Agriculture and thanked farmers for their efforts in massive production.

Mr. Mensah congratulated the government for increasing the price of cocoa by GHc40 adding that the government will assist farmers with tools, implements, and subsidies to boost production.

This year's Farmers' Day celebration was unique with a host of activities such as artificial farming, motorized solo spraying, free skills service to the youth by Aseda Foundation, free Medicare screening, Access Development, a Social Enterprise in safe, sustainable, innovative water solutions, Inter-Area Council soccer competition.

In attendance, was NERO X and Afro Moses all the way from Australia for a live performance and DJ Tablet who rocked an open house party video, mixes, music, and movies.
