More needed to improve the lot of the youth

The National Network of Youth Groups in Governance (NNYOG) in the Upper West Region has said the youth are faced with a host of challenges and this has hindered their development.

It said the poverty eradication effort has not been effective and this has resulted in their inability to contribute their quota towards national development.

A statement by NNYOG and signed by Mr Sumaila Shaibu Poleenaa to mark this year’s International Youth Day celebration in Wa, said the youth formed a huge chunk of the Ghana’s population and more can be done for them to contribute effectively towards national development but there are no jobs and employment opportunities.

The Day was on the theme: “The road to 2030: Eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable consumption and production”.

The statement said though the universities continued to produce more graduates, there were still no jobs and employment opportunities available to the youth.

It expressed unhappiness with the National Youth Policy Implementation Plan, saying its impact is not being felt.

The statement called on the youth to strive for quality education- the education which would help them gain meaningful employment.

It also called on government to detach politics from its youth policies and the implementation of programmes.

The statement also appealed to government to consider resourcing the National Youth Authority to empower the youth for development.
