The Lebanese Community has extended its scholarship support to 15 law graduate students commencing their professional course at the Ghana School of Law.
In an impressive ceremony at the Embassy in Osu at the weekend, the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana His Excellency Ali Halabi said, “These students were the original beneficiaries of the scholarship programme that was began four (4) years ago by the Lebanese community in Ghana.
“Since 2013, the Lebanese Community has been giving about a hundred (100) scholarships to Ghanaian students every year.
“The importance of rule of law in society cannot be gainsaid. It provides a regulatory framework that ensures that individuals and businesses thrive in society. The need for the continuity of a favourable state of law in Ghana is at the heart of the Lebanese Community. I have realised that legal education and the attainment of this favourable rule of law system are not mutually exclusive.”
The Lebanese Ambassador mentioned that the role the school of Law plays over the years- instrumental in shaping Ghana’s political evolution and constitutional jurisprudence informed his outfit’s decision for the support.
He added that “This is going to be a new scholarship scheme that will include providing support to selected students undergoing the professional training at the Ghana School of Law and those undertaking the Masters’ Programme at the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
“I say “congratulations!” to you students. You have come a long way in the past four years. And you have done exceedingly well beyond my expectations.
"But do not relent. Continue to chalk academic and professional accolades. And do well to contribute your quota to the development of the rule of law in Ghana.”
The Pro Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student affairs, University of Ghana Professor S. Kwame Offei said that “… the scholarship is a great relief for management and of course parents of the beneficiaries to receive financial assistance that addresses almost their entire financial need in school.
“I wish to on behalf of management of our universities express our profound gratitude to HE Halabi and the entire Lebanese Community for your immense support for education in the country.”
The beneficiaries included eight students from KNUST and seven from University of Ghana.
Dean of Faculty of Law Dr.(Mrs) Lydia A. Nkansah also said “ Every nation (Ghana) needs lawyers to craft laws to ensure stability and fight against the threat of terrorism. A solid legal environment will attract investors.
Scholarship will help students acquire quality education to contribute to the legal profession and facilitate development”.
