There was near pandemonium and confusion at the Annual Global African Investment Forum held in Westminster, Central London after a heated exchange between Ghana’s President John Mahama and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo degenerated into open insults.This was due to General Obasanjo openly accusing the Ghanaian president and his government of blackmailing and collecting bribes from Nigerian businessmen in Ghana, buying numerous properties in Nigeria and South Africa and financially contributing 12 million dollars to Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign last year. This infuriated President Mahama who lost his temper and pointing his finger, called General Obasanjo an ” idiot” and a “silly buffoon”.It took other ministers present as well as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to calm tempers and usher President Mahama to a nearby room. The forum, which takes place from 1st to 3rd December is attended by African Heads of States, Ministers, Private equity firms and investors to discuss opportunities for investment and development in African Economies.

In addition, 50,000 planting material of yam and 3,000 suckers of plantain are targeted for Production.
Under the enhanced access to quality rice seed initiative, 200mt of improved rice seed were distributed to 10,000 farmers in the Volta, Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions to increase productivity. 90,000mt, out of a target of 180,000mt of fertilizer was procured and distributed to farmers countrywide. This is expected to increase the use of fertilizer in the country and also enhance crop production especially in the Northern Sector where soil nutrients are low. To boost local rice production, 77 SAME tractors, 49 power tillers, 20 rice threshers, 11 rice reapers and six rice mills with their respective Components were assembled and sold to farmers. In addition, 100 units of Cabrio tractors with multi components were assembled for sale to farmers on hire purchase.

As a result Work on the 110MW TICO expansion was completed and the commissioning and commencement of commercial operations are expected shortly.
Under the 220MW Kpone Thermal Power Project, mechanical completion was achieved and it is expected to be commissioned for operations to commence before the end of the year.
360MW Sunon Asogli expansion project are on-going. The first half of this project with an installed capacity of 180MW is to be commissioned before the end of 2015. The second half of another 180MW would be completed by the second quarter of 2016.

I am more than happy that President Mahama has focused on this aspect of governance and is using public funds to prove to the citizens that providing facilities for them is a sure step toward giving them the chance to uplift themselves. The government won't be fixated on infrastructural development in its second term but on measures to improve livelihood, taking advantage of the infrastructural base already laid.
