Assembly members at the Kwabre East district of the Ashanti Region have resolved to engage the services of a lawyer to scrutinise an agreement their District Chief Executive (DCE), Iddisah Adams, approved without their consent.

At a meeting on Tuesday, October 25, the assembly decided to withhold a vote of no confidence they had wanted to pass on the DCE for the area as a result of the deal.

The disgruntled members have accused the DCE of awarding the contract to a waste management company to manage a landfill site in the district. As part of the contract, the assembly will pay GHS 50,000 to Solid Waste Management Company Limited in every quarter.

But the assembly members feel the cost is too high, coupled with the failure of the DCE to consult them in the search for a company to execute the job.

The Presiding Member for the Kwabre East District Assembly, Nana Ampedu Kyere, told Class News in an interview: “The members said they were not interested in the contract so we invited the lawyer to give us legal advice to take a decision that will not lead to judgement debts which could be greater than the cost of the contract.”

Mr Adams admitted his failure to notify the assembly before going ahead to award the contract but explained that there was no ill motive in signing the deal.

“It was not with a bad intention for signing that contract. Unfortunately, it was lack of communication that has led to these misunderstandings. After explaining to them, they have understood that I did nothing wrong [in awarding the contract]. However, I should have informed them,” he added.
