PRO of the Krachi Youth Association, Barnabas Yeboah
The Krachi Youth Association has chided two groups in the Volta Region fighting against the creation of the Oti Region.
Reacting to the tensions in a press release signed by its Public Relation Officer (PRO), Barnabas Yeboah, the association condemned the groups for undermining the creation of the region.
The Association of Western Togoland Youths and Concerned Citizens of Volta Region have protested against government’s intention to create the Oti Region. The two groups believe that the creation of the region would break their front.
Mr. Barnabas Yeboah noted that the Northern and Southern parts of the Volta Region came together through colonialism for administrative purposes and no one can lord itself over the others.
He added that the Northern part of the region is one of the deprived areas in Ghana with the absence of many social amenities.
According to the statement, “The Oti enclave has been denied any meaningful development. It is certainly not a good feeling for us to find ourselves in this situation. We are among the main producers of the food and cash crops that make up the national gross domestic product but the least beneficiaries of the proceeds from it.”
He noted that the creation of the region would not affect the Southern part of the Volta Region who are predominately Ewes whiles the Northern part are made up of Guans and Akans.
He said the association is therefore surprised that the Association of Western Togoland Youths and Concerned Citizens of Volta Region are all against the creation of the region.
He noted that the attitude of the groups is undemocratic, “We respect the cordial relationship we have enjoyed over the years with our Southern brothers and sisters despite the unpleasant under development we witnessed under the current Volta Region,” he said.
The Commission of Inquiry working towards the creation of new regions led by Justice S.A. Brobbey have so far visited Ho, Dambai, Kete-Krachi to listen to petitioners on the need to create the Oti Region.
