Head porters below ten years invade Kumasi

A section of Juvenile head porters (Kayayoo) in Kumasi the capital of Ashanti region have appealed to government and philanthropists to come to their aid by providing them shelter.

These juvenile head porters referred as Kayayoo have attained the ages of 8, 10, 12, and 14.

Speaking to OTEC FM's Isaac Nsiah Foster on Tuesday February 13, 2018, they hinted "we preferred being head porters (Kayayoo) to being in school because our parents are poor and could not afford to see us through school.”Some of us had to travel all the way here to support our family", they said.

However a section of the head porters (Kayayoos) said “if we chance upon any assistance from the government or any philanthropist we will be learning trades such as tailoring, carpentry and the likes.

Majority of these children hails from the three Northern regions according to those who spoke to OTEC FM.

These juvenile head porters (Kayayoos) usually dwell in slums in Asokore Mampong and other parts of the Kumasi metropolis.

They say they normally record GHC15 - 60 as their daily income from which all other expenses are made.
