The Brong Ahafo Regional Co-ordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Setina Aboagye, has cautioned parents and other persons against the use of children for income generating activities, and other forms of abuse of the child.

She was particularly disturbed about the use of school-going children for begging, hawking and other inordinate activities.

DSP Aboagye was answering questions from Suncity Radio’s Morning Show Host, Nana KAS, on her outfit’s concerns about child abuse and irresponsible parenthood, in the Brong Ahafo region.

She explained that it was illegal to beg for money on the streets, while parents who fail to send their children to school, were also liable for prosecution.

“However, before we pull the whip, we are embarking on an intensive public education on child abuse and responsible parenting, so that at the end of the day, offenders would have no excuse to face the law; after all, ignorance of the law, is no excuse,” she disclosed.

The DOVVSU Co-ordinator further advised parents to give personal attention to the education of their children. “Some of the little children are left to walk long distances to and from school, exposing them to all sorts of dangers, we need to give maximum care and protection to our children, in order to secure their future well being,” she stated.
