Commercial Drivers operating at Winneba Roundabout Lorry station have called on the Effutu Municipal Security Council to put in place drastic measures to decongest the area.
This, they added would help to curb recent traffic jams on the major Accra-Cape Coast- Takoradi road that passed through the Roundabout.
The drivers made the call at a sanitisation forum organised by Grace Multi-Medianet Service, a Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) in collaboration with the Road Safety Commission and the Winneba Police MTTD at the Winneba Roundabout Lorry Station.
The programme was on the theme ““Let us look out for each other on the road to save lives”.
Mrs Yaa Konadu Johnson Dzameshie, Programme Officer of Grace Multi-Medianet Service in her welcome address, stated that the programme was aimed at sensitising drivers and pedestrians to be extra careful when using the roads especially during the raining season.
She appealed to all roads users to adhere to road safety, transport and traffic rules and regulations in order to help eradicate or reduce road accidents to the minimum level.
Mr Richard Fredun Agyeman, a staff of the Central Regional Road Safety Commission Directorate who took them through some road safety measures said, ensuring sanity on the road is not the responsibility of the government alone but all Ghanaians.
He appealed to drivers to limit their speeding during the raining season, ensure that their worn-out tyres, wipers and faulty lights were replaced and advised against speeding as most accidents occured on flat and good roads.
He cautioned drivers against alcoholism and drugs as it was detrimental to their health and urged them to relate politely to their passengers.
DSP Charles Obiri, Winneba District MTTD Commander urged drivers to exercise restraint in the execution of their work, saying the police were there to enforce laws, protect lives and property and would not allow bad nuts in the transport industry to disobey rules and regulations pertaining to their work.
He announced that the MTTD, DVLA and the Road Safety Commission would continue to educate drivers to ensure that they did the right thing to save lives.
Nana Obosu II, Winneba District GPRTU chairman who, chaired the event commended the organisers of the programme, and urged drivers to use their knowledge to help stop accidents.
“I strongly suggest to Institutions that are mandated to ensure sanity on the road to be functioning by arresting and prosecuting undisciplined drivers in society.”
