The Adontenhene of the Akpafu Traditional Area, Nana Tetteh Atu IV, has fumed over the inclusion of Akpafu lands in the demarcated land area for the proposed Oti Region which would be created out of the Volta Region.

According to him, the Akpafus have never been part of the voices calling for the territorial split of the Volta region, hence, could not understand why the traditional area is earmarked to be part of the new region.

Nana Tetteh Atu IV maintained that the no Akpafu Chief was part of the brains which begun the struggle for a new region in the northern part of the Volta Region adding “we registered a strong cautionary petition on 28th April 1992, when the map of Akpafu was wrongly attached to the said petition for the proposed region.”

Speaking at a press conference in Akpafu Mpeasem, he reiterated their stance to be allowed to remain an integral part of the Hohoe Municipality of which the traditional area is a founding member in 1978.

He further stated that “emphatically, Akpafu Traditional Area remain part of Hohoe Municipality for proximity, academic, administrative, political and economic advantages.“

The traditional ruler, however, argued why the region which has 25 district and municipalities is not proposed to be proportional divided into 12 and 13 districts where “the historical background of Volta South and Volta North” should be maintained.

”The people of Akpafu (Mawu) do not crave for the formation of a new district as SALL - Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe [in the new region]”, he added.

Nana Tetteh Atu IV also questioned the assertion that a new regional status would bring development as being preached by petitioners who are clamouring for the territorial split of the Volta Region.

“Development is not size biased. It anchors on availability of economic resources with efficient utilisation”, he stressed.
