Parts of the ceiling of the Kumasi City Mall in the Ashanti regional capital collapsed on Tuesday morning.

The incident happened at the time management of the facility were preparing to open the mall to the public for business to commence.

No casualty was recorded. It is not clear what caused the ceiling to cave in.

The $95 million mall which covers 15.4 acres of land was commissioned in 2017 by President Akufo-Addo.

The biggest mall in the Ashanti region has 74 different shops, providing goods and/or services in groceries, electronics, entertainment, fashion, lifestyle and more.

The property is owned by Delico Property Limited.

Meanwhile, officials of National Disaster Management Organisation have been to the mall to clear the rubble for normal business to go on.

In October this year, three Nigerian shoppers got injured when a portion of the attic of the Accra Mall caved in.

Though the mall was opened to the public within a week, Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo tweeted expressing “worry” about the incident, noting he was “disturbed” by the incident.

With the Accra incident fresh on the minds of shoppers in the wake of frequent collapse of buildings across the country, especially in cities, people are worried about the structural integrity of facilities in the country.
