The collapsed classroom block in the Oti region
A classroom block of the Anwar Islamic Basic School at Dodi Papase in the Kadjebi District of Oti Region has been collapsed by rainstorm, displacing school children.
The storm, which occurred at about 1700 hours on March 16, 2019 has compelled pre-school children, and lower primary pupils to conduct classes under trees.
Mr Ibrahim Hakim, Assembly Member for the area who also teaches at the School told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that pupils had for years been risking their lives under the derelict six unit mud structure built in 1996.
He said the structure had long lost its doors and bars, and also had walls leaning in dangerously.
Mr Hakim said the School of pupil population of 382 had its upper primary classes combined, and appealed to Government and benevolent individuals and organisations to help rebuild the School.
He said the School only received support from its Parent-Teacher Association, and some Islamic brothers in the diaspora who had built a three-unit classroom block with an office for the Junior High School.
Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that lower primary and kindergarten pupils sat on wooden planks laid on bare floors, whiles others managed to sit four in a dual desk.
Mrs Eunice Rashida Apraku, Headmistress of the School said both pre-school and the lower primary classes had no teachers and were served by voluntary staff.
She appealed for the School to be included in the school feeding programme, saying most pupils failed to return after visiting their homes to feed during lunch breaks.
