The Chief of the Felimuo Traditional Area, Naa (Dr) Francis Mwin-Iremeh Danikuu II, has appealed to the Government to consider establishing a technical/vocational school in Felimuo to improve access to secondary education.
He made the appeal in a speech read on his behalf during the 21st Kuku Bagr Festival at Felimuo in the Upper West Region.
It was on the theme: “Enhancing Our Cultural Heritage for Unity and Development”.
The Kuku Bagr Festival is celebrated every year by the people of Felimuo as a reminder of their oneness and to take stock of the past successes and failures while thanking God for a bumper harvest.
Naa (Dr) Damikuu said education was the pillar and foundation for development and stressed the importance of technical/vocational education to the progress of every nation, on which much premium must be placed.
He advised all to protect the positive culture of the country as well as preserve the environment for a prosperous future.
"Let’s be reminded by the adage that when the last tree dies, the last man dies and in the same way if culture dies, clans, ethnic groups and families lose identity," he said.
He said one of the main reasons people rushed for foreign foods and clothes was because of the country’s gradual loss of its culture and appealed to government to include culture as a subject in the basic schools’ curriculum.
The Chief said the Traditional Area faced a lot of challenges and mentioned poor road network, lack of health centre and ambulance for the Sissala West District.
“The Felimuo Traditional area has several challenges such as bad road network, lack of a health centre and there is no ambulance for the Sisaala West District but what is so dear to the people of Felimuo is for government to establish a technical/vocational school in the community, and that is my appeal to government."
Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, assured the chief and people that government would address their concerns.
He appealed to the people to continue to live in peace and harmony and that equitable development was a priority of the Government.
