Accra, Sept. 26, GNA - Parents have been advised to make use of schools' counseling units for the choice of vocation for their children. Pastor Philip Osei Korsah, Head of Career Guidance and Counseling Unit of Pentecost Church, giving the advice, said some students excelled in some subjects but that could not guarantee their future occupation, therefore, hence parents should assess their performance for career choice.
Pastor Korsah made the call at a day's Career Guidance and Counselin= g seminar for Junior High School (JHS) students within the Taifa District of Church of Pentecost in Accra on Monday. The seminar on the theme: 93Learning towards a Fulfilled Vocation" was organised as part of the annual Pentecost Social Service (PENTSOS) Week of the Church. It was designed to extend social services to the community. Pastor Korsah noted that students had been exposed to many subjects at the JHS level than in the past and therefore it behooved on parents and students to have broader knowledge about available careers on the job market. However, he advised students not to shy away from subjects that they did not perform well but rather learn and know all the subjects to improve upon their performance during examination.
"Students must know areas and subjects they performed well to measur= e their interest in their careers. There are many avenues for students to explore if they could not perform well in their final examinations and become drop-outs or their parents could not have the needed funds to continue with their education," he added. Pastor Korsah said anyone could venture into apprenticeship in hairdressing, carpentry, masonry, tailoring and other trades and sit for an examination to acquire certificates to become qualified professionals in their fields. He told the students that it was not only those who were not brilliant that enter into vocational training, adding 93It is your brain that you wi= ll use to achieve your dream. Whatever field you choose for yourself pursue it because the sky is the limit". Mr Winfried Addae, Dome Circuit Supervisor of Education, advised the students that whatever would be their career could not be attained on a silver platter but through hard work and seriousness in school. He urged them to be attentive and discipline during in school and acquire good note taking skills with personal time-table for learning daily or in addition formed group discussion.
Mr Addae appealed to the students to refrain from using their learning periods to listening to music on mobile phones, which would eventually affect them in their performance, avoid peer pressure and narcotic drugs. Pastor F.O. Nyarko, Head Pastor of Taifa District of Church of Pentecost, asked the students to remain focused on their lessons and not be lazy. He urged students to endeavour to improve upon their performance. As part of the week-long celebration a four-hour clean-up exercise was organised at Taifa main lorry station. They cleared choked gutters, swept and weeded bushes along the road sides. Mr Agyenin Boateng, Assemblyman for the area, advised the people to stop indiscriminate throwing of garbage into gutters and other places to prevent outbreak of diseases.
