"The journey I have embarked is very tough and I must say that in my coaching career, this is the biggest challenge [even ahead of my time at Hearts]. I'm determined to do my best and succeed but I'm not a miracle man to turn things around so easily. Therefore, together we can do a miracle".
These were the words of Kotoko's new head coach, CK Akonnor, a man who has managed some of Ghana’s glamorous clubs including the glorious Accra hearts of oak and Ashanti Gold FC.
Make no mistake, CK Akonnor is one of the finest coaches on the local scene but with his statements, he was just being honest and realistic. The target his new club’s management has laid before him for the next three football seasons is an impossible one.
The Porcupine Warriors have tasked their new boss to win the Ghana Premier League, CAF Champions league within the shortest possible time.
He might win the Ghana Premier League next Season and qualify the team for Africa, but bringing a continental Glory to the club in his 3rd season from where the club now seems impossible.
Mind you, the possibility of seeing CK Akonnor at the club’s helm after three years is not a certainty. Given the club’s record of lack of impatience for managers and the fact that he is the Kotoko’s seventh coach in just three seasons.
The resources at Kotoko, compared to the genuine Africa contenders such as Ahly, Esperance, Wydad, Zamalek, TP Mazembe, does not even warrant the success the club screams for.
Albeit, congratulations to CK Akonnor on his appointment and I hope he proves me and many doubters wrong!
