The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that votes cast in favor of the late flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Madam Akua Donkor, in the upcoming December 7, 2024, presidential election will be counted as rejected ballots. This decision comes after the GFP's flagbearer passed away, but her image and party logo remain on the 2024 Presidential Ballot Paper .
The EC explained that votes cast in favor of Madam Akua Donkor will not be added to the valid votes cast. This decision may impact the overall outcome of the election, as rejected ballots have been a concern in Ghana's past elections. In fact, between 1992 and 2020, a total of 1,498,085 ballots were rejected in national elections .
