Akyeame, Otumfour The recent remarks made by Panyin Kyeame, the Chief Linguist to Otumfour Osei Tutu II, the Ashanti King, about gender roles in marriage have sparked controversy. In an interview with Precise FM, he made the case that although a wife may want to assist her husband in the kitchen or with the laundry, it is not her duty to do so.
An ex-journalist named Kyeame clarified that it is unjust and out of date to expect a woman to do housework just because of her gender.
Instead of strict gender standards, he underlined that nowadays, household duties should be divided according to convenience and mutual consent. According to him, "a wife can assist her husband in cooking or cleaning, but she is not required to do so."
His remarks have generated conflicting responses on social media, with some applauding his progressive stance and others believing it goes against conventional gender norms.
