George Opare-Addo is a prominent Ghanaian lawyer and politician currently serving as the Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment of Ghana under the John Mahama government.

He also holds the position of National Youth Organiser for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party.

Current Role

George Opare-Addo serves as Ghana’s first Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, having assumed office on January 16, 2025.

His appointment was approved by the Parliament of Ghana on January 23, 2025, and he was officially sworn into office by President John Dramani Mahama on January 24, 2025.

As Minister, he has held this position for approximately one year and one month.

Early Life and Education

Born in Nima in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, George Opare-Addo completed his primary education at Achimota Primary School and attended Adisadel College for his secondary education from 1997 to 1999.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Ghana, Legon.

Opare-Addo also holds a master's degree in Governance from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), as well as an LLB from GIMPA, and a Qualifying Certificate in Law (QCL).

Early Career

Following his graduation from the University of Ghana in 2005, George Opare-Addo began his career at the IGIT Group of Companies as a National Service Personnel.

By 2009, he had advanced to the role of manager, where he managed business strategy, budgets, and staff development.

In 2009, he was appointed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, serving in that capacity until 2017.

During his tenure as MCE, he represented central government interests locally, presided over municipal security council meetings, and directed day-to-day administrative functions.

Opare-Addo also contested as the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the Okere Constituency in both 2008 and 2012.

Political Career

George Opare-Addo's political journey began during his tenure as the Municipal Chief Executive for the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, where he was actively involved in local economic development.

He also provided logistical and financial support to expand the NDC's membership base in the region while contesting for the Parliamentary seat.

In October 2018, he was elected as the National Youth Organiser of the NDC, a role he held through December 2022 and continues to serve in.

In this leadership position, he offers strategic direction to the party’s Youth Wing, supervises research and advocacy initiatives, and coordinates fundraising efforts aligned with the party’s social justice ideals. Currently, he remains the first appointed Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment.

Private Life

George Opare-Addo is married to Rahina Garba, and together they have three children as of 2026.
