Angry National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in Tamale in the Northern Region have threatened to run riot, following the removal of Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu as Minority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament.

They claim that the decision of the party to remove Mr Iddrisu as its leader in the legislature is borne out of hatred for him, warning that the decision could cause the defeat of the NDC especially in the Northern Region.

The main opposition party in a letter signed by its General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey said Adjumako MP and current ranking member on the Finance Committee Cassiel Ato Forson will replace Haruna Iddrisu as the Minority leader.

Even though the party did not state reasons for the removal of the Minority leader and other members of the minority leadership in Parliament including its Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, the angry NDC supporters alleged that the party Chairman, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah orchestrated their removal because they did not support him during the party’s National Delegates Congress held late last year.

Others claimed Mr Aseidu Nketiah is nursing a Presidential ambition and thus, wants to ‘cripple’ all other potential presidential candidates of the NDC, including Mr Iddrisu, hence the decision.

Party sympathizers besieged the NDC Tamale South Constituency office in anger, threatening to protest against the decision.

“I swear God, we will not agree, we know what Chairman Mosquito is doing and we will not sit unconcerned. If the party doesn’t reverse the decision, they should not blame us for our next line of action” an Angry supporter told Tamale based Radio Justice 98.5 FM.

Others took to social media to vent their displeasure at the decision.

“The thought process and the decision is not only faulty but tactless. It lacks foresight and strategy.

It is even more annoying and insulting listening to the rationale for that decision by our national chairman.

And come to think of it, such a decision was taken without any proper consultation. The reactions from members of that caucus are telling.” a social media user, Cde Abdul Salim Tiyumba wrote on Facebook.

Samira Seidu, another Facebook user wrote “This one be like coup d’état 🙄🙄 Charlie ka easy. #NDC”.

Meanwhile, a Group calling itself Concerned Dagbon Youth have in a statement said the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is engaged in tribal machinations which will harm not only the immediate past Minority Leader but also the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“We believe that the removal of the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, as rumored as a catalyst to cripple the honorable man, was engineered by tribal machination, which will harm not only him but the NDC in its entirety.,” the group said in a statement.

The group, according to a MyNewsGh report, called on the leadership of the largest opposition party to explain reasons behind the sudden changes.

“By issuing this statement, we are demanding that the NDC leadership explain the disastrous decision they have made. Again, we have taken note from reputable sources of this delusional cabal’s decision to steer the ship for a selfish individual to sponsor a candidate against Honourable Haruna Iddrissu, and we can assure them that we are fully armed and will confront them rigorously in any of their evil machinations.”
