Dan Kwaku Yeboah recalls hilarious encounters with late Daddy Lumba
Ghanaian media personality Dan Kwaku Yeboah has recounted some of the hilarious and unforgettable moments he had with the late highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.
Speaking during his performance at the DYK comedy night, Dan Kwaku Yeboah recounted an incident involving the late musician during a show at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.
According to him, Daddy Lumba and his colleagues were picked up from the airport in a convertible car as part of their arrival at the stadium, where thousands of fans had gathered hoping to catch a glimpse of the legendary musician.
“When they got to the airport, they picked Lumba up with an open-top car. Lumba’s fans were all over the stadium and wanted to see the legend,” he recalled.
He mentioned that organisers expected Daddy Lumba to stand in the vehicle and wave to the fans when they reached the entrance of the stadium, but he didn't.
“They asked him to stand in the car and wave to the fans when they got to the entrance of the stadium. When they got there, the driver slowed down to see if Lumba would stand, but he didn’t,” he stated.
According to Dan Kwaku Yeboah, the driver eventually informed Daddy Lumba that they had arrived at the stadium, but the musician's response was unexpected.
“The driver then alerted him that they were at the stadium; he replied, asking the driver if he was blind. Did the driver think he didn’t know they were at the entrance and that he should move the car?” he asked.
He said Daddy Lumba was not concerned about whether fans would come into the stadium or not.
“If he gets on stage and they won’t come, that’s up to them,” he recalled the late musician saying.
Dan Kwaku Yeboah also recounted another incident involving a Christmas concert the late musician organised in Kumasi.
“He again organised his own show in Kumasi to entertain his fans in the Christmas season. Everyone bought their tickets because they were excited it was him,” he shared.
However, when Daddy Lumba eventually appeared on stage, he reportedly told the audience that he could not perform because he was dissatisfied with the sound system.
“When he got on stage, he picked a mic and said to the fans that he knew they were there because of the love they had for him, but he couldn’t perform because the sound wasn’t good,” he noted.

Dan Kwaku Yeboah shared that Daddy Lumba ultimately did not perform that night, but his immense popularity meant that fans would still have attended his shows whenever he announced another performance.
“Truthfully, he didn’t perform, but with who he was, when he calls again, people would show up,” he said.
The comedian also reflected on the numerous false reports about Daddy Lumba's death that circulated while the musician was alive.
He criticised the tendency of some Ghanaians to repeatedly speculate about the musician's death without verifying the information.
“Ghanaians too, we’re part of the reason why we lost him. Every year, people were speculating that Lumba was dead,” he stated.
He recalled one particular occasion when rumours spread that Daddy Lumba had died after people reportedly tried calling him but could not reach him.
“One time, I heard people saying he’s dead and no one was answering his phone when they called him,” he recounted.
Dan Kwaku Yeboah said he decided to call Daddy Lumba himself and was fortunate that the musician answered.
“Fortunately for me, when I called, he answered, and I asked him if he knew what people were saying about him,” he added.
According to him, Daddy Lumba responded calmly and advised him not to pay attention to the rumours.
“He told me not to listen to Ghanaians because they do that every time,” he recalled.
Dan Kwaku Yeboah further explained that people who had worked closely with Daddy Lumba would understand the side of the musician he was referring to.
“If you don’t know, go and ask Dr Kwaku. They’ve worked with Daddy Lumba before,” he added.
He further expressed sadness over Daddy Lumba's passing, noting that the music icon was expected to appear on his show before his death.
“He was supposed to be on my show, but unfortunately death has other ideas. Lumba is a legend by all standards, but those who have encountered him know that he was worrisome,” he said.
