Ohemaa Mercy tearfully recounts painful season that inspired 'Se Abotare Twen Me' song
Gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy has opened up about one of the darkest periods of her life, revealing that her hit song Se Abotare Twen Me was born out of a season of humiliation, disappointment and financial hardship.
Speaking in an interview with Niki Samonas, the award-winning singer said the song continues to move her emotionally every time she performs it because it reminds her of the painful experiences that inspired its message.
Recalling the incident, Ohemaa Mercy narrated how she was once forced to leave her classroom after a creditor came to demand money she owed.
“I remember when I was in a classroom. I was owing someone and the person came around to collect the money. I had to leave the classroom and while leaving, one of my shoes got torn, so I had to carry one of them,” she recounted.
According to her, the humiliation became even more painful when she encountered a man pleading with the woman to spare her the embarrassment.
“I met a gentleman who knelt before the lady, begging her to leave me alone and promising that he would pay the money. After everything was settled, I went back to my office and I was crying,” she said.
It was during that emotional moment, she revealed, that she heard what she described as God’s voice giving her the message that would later become the foundation of the song.
“I heard this loud voice that said, ‘Be calm and wait on me because I don’t break my promises like they assume I do.’ It is something I will remember for the rest of my life. It wasn’t easy. It was a season of disgrace and disappointment, but this is a message God gave me, and honestly, it has transformed many lives,” she stated.
Asked how she managed to recover from that difficult period, Ohemaa Mercy said she drew strength from the very message God had given her.
“I had to encourage myself because that message really spoke to me. Until God unveiled me, that was the only message I carried to the studio. Lo and behold, Nacee helped me write all those powerful songs,” she added.
