GPRTU hints at transport fare hike over rise in fuel prices
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has hinted at an increase in transport fares following the recent rise in fuel prices.
GPRTU Deputy National Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, said the union is monitoring developments at the fuel pumps before deciding on new fares.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, Amoah said transport fares could be increased even if fuel prices remain at their current levels because the union had expected a reduction in petroleum prices.

“Even if the fuel price remains where it is now, there is the possibility for us to increase transport fares. The reason being that we were promised a reduction in petroleum products, not an increment or maintaining it,” he said.
He explained that the union had earlier agreed not to increase fares based on the government’s assurance that fuel prices would come down within a month.
“We understood the government by not increasing transport fares because of the promise they gave us, that we should give them one month and they are going to make sure that things will come down,” Amoah stated.
According to him, the high cost of fuel is making it difficult for drivers to generate enough revenue and maintain their vehicles.
He said any development other than a reduction in fuel prices could lead to an increase in transport fares.
Amoah added that the union’s leadership is expected to meet and announce a decision by the end of the week.
