IGP deploys reinforcement team to contain violence in New Winneba
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed a reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters to New Winneba in the Central Region following a violent shooting incident that has left at least three people dead and about 15 others injured.
The reinforcement, ordered after an estimated 300-member mob reportedly stormed the township on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, is aimed at containing the violence and preventing further escalation.
The Police said the incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. when the group, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, entered New Winneba.
According to the Police, the group was armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks and attacked residents, shops and properties belonging to natives of the area.

The ensuing violence resulted in several injuries, with about 15 victims transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.
A police officer was also injured during the incident.
Three people have so far been confirmed dead in connection with the violence.
In response, the IGP directed the deployment of the additional security team to support personnel already operating in the area.
The reinforcement includes two armoured vehicles, which have been dispatched to strengthen security operations and protect residents and property.
Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols have also been deployed to the affected areas to restore and maintain calm.
The Police Service said the situation is currently under control, although security personnel remain deployed to prevent any further escalation.
The Police have assured residents and the general public that further details will be communicated as investigations and security operations continue.
