New Winneba Attack: 'If the law fails, we will declare government an enemy of Gomoa' - A-Plus
Following violent disturbances in New Winneba that resulted in three deaths and left about 15 people injured, Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has warned that the community could declare the government an enemy of Gomoa if authorities fail to protect them and ensure justice.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on September 1, 2026, A-Plus expressed concern over the violence and called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
He appealed to residents to remain calm while insisting that the law must be allowed to take its course and that the authorities must provide adequate security for people in the affected communities.
“We want the IGP to come. I am going to speak with my people. I am going to ask everybody to remain calm, but we want the law to take its course. If the law does not take its course, we, the people of Gomoa, will come together. We will give them seven days. If the law does not take its course, we will call every chief in Gomoa, and we will declare the government an enemy of Gomoa. We are very serious,” he said.
The MP claimed that a group of individuals had assumed control of lands in the area and were allegedly operating as landguards, a situation he said had fuelled tensions between communities.
“There are a few people who have made themselves landguards and are causing havoc. Everyone knows their boundary,” he stated.

A-Plus said efforts had previously been made to resolve the land-related disagreements before they eventually erupted into violence.
He disclosed that he had petitioned the Lands Commission and the Minister of Interior over the disputed properties and subsequently received a detailed report on lands belonging to Effutu and Gomoa.
“I petitioned the Interior Minister and he also informed the police to take up the matter even before it escalated,” A-Plus stated.
He also raised concerns about the police response to September 1’s disturbances, alleging that some residents involved in the demonstration were unarmed while officers discharged firearms.
“Today, the people said they were demonstrating, they were gunless; the police were rather firing guns,” he claimed.
The Gomoa Central MP called for the Inspector-General of Police to personally visit New Winneba and investigate the circumstances that led to the violence.
“As the MP for Gomoa Central, IGP must come here. The boys know where their power is coming from,” he said.
A-Plus further alleged that some police officers could be benefiting from the activities of people involved in the disputed land matters, and urged authorities to investigate the claims.
“Some of the police are benefiting from them. We will not allow it to go on. Those people who perpetrated this are walking freely,” he alleged.
He also dismissed claims that the incident represented a wider conflict between the Effutu and Gomoa ethnic groups.
According to him, the violence was linked to specific individuals whom he accused of unlawfully taking control of lands in New Winneba.
“It’s not a fight between Effutu and Gomoa. It’s the few people who have made themselves landguards and are attacking and taking over lands in New Winneba, and the lands originally belong to the people of Gomoa,” he stated.
The Ghana Police Service said it has contained violent clashes that broke out at New Winneba in the Central Region on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
In a statement, the Police said the trouble began around 10:40 a.m. when a group of approximately 300 people allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks entered New Winneba Township.
The group, said to have come from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, allegedly attacked residents and destroyed shops and other properties belonging to people from the area.
The disturbances resulted in at least three deaths, while about 15 people sustained injuries. The injured, including a police officer, were taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.
