GWCL faces 131m-gallon daily water supply shortfall
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Adam Mutawakilu, has revealed that the company currently supplies water to about 18.5 million people across the country, despite having just over one million registered customers.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Mutawakilu said GWCL has more than one million customers to whom it supplies water throughout the year.
“We have over one million customers. When I say one million customers, I don’t mean those who consume our water because, under every customer, you can have more than five or 10 people,” he explained.

He cited the example of a landlord who is registered as the customer, even though the water connection serves several tenants living on the same property.
“In reality, we serve about 18.5 million,” Mutawakilu stated.
However, he said the company is currently unable to produce enough water to meet national demand.
GWCL currently produces about 219 million gallons of water daily, while national demand is estimated at 350 million gallons, leaving a daily shortfall of about 131 million gallons.
Mutawakilu said the company is working to improve the situation by replacing old pipelines, fighting illegal connections and upgrading its metering systems.
He said these measures are aimed at making water supply more reliable while reducing losses within the distribution network.
