Ghanaian footballer Roland Mawuli dies in Spain at 22
Ghanaian football has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of young footballer Roland Mawuli in Spain.
Mawuli, 22, was a player of Spanish lower-tier side Ciudad de Calasparra, competing in the Preferente Murcia league.
His club announced his death on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, prompting an outpouring of condolences from clubs and members of the football community across the Murcia region.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not been disclosed.

Mawuli had spent several seasons with Ciudad de Calasparra and was part of the club’s senior setup. Football records show that he made 23 appearances for the club during the 2024/25 season, including 16 starts, while also featuring for the club’s B team.
Before his move to Spain, Mawuli played for Ghanaian lower-tier side Dansoman Wise XI FC, where he became an important figure in the club’s development.
Dansoman Wise XI described him as one of the first two players from the club to travel to Spain, saying his journey helped open the door for several young talents who later followed a similar pathway.
The club expressed its condolences to Mawuli’s family, friends, former teammates and loved ones, while remembering him as a permanent part of the Dansoman Wise XI story.
