Otto Addo, Sam Arday, Carlos Queiroz: Black Stars coaches who returned for a second stint
Carlos Queiroz has become the latest coach to return to the Black Stars dugout after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) reappointed him to lead the national team into the qualifiers of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nation.
The Portuguese coach’s previous mandate ended just a few weeks ago following Ghana’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, after discussions between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Queiroz, an agreement was reached for him to continue in charge, beginning with the next international window. 
His return places him among a group of coaches who have previously left the Black Stars job before making a comeback.
C.K. Gyamfi
C.K. Gyamfi was one of Ghana’s earliest and most successful coaches.
He first led the Black Stars between 1963 and 1965, guiding Ghana to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations titles.
He returned to the national team in 1982 and immediately produced another historic achievement, leading Ghana to its fourth AFCON title.
Fred Osam-Duodu
Fred Osam-Duodu is arguably the biggest example of a coach repeatedly returning to the Black Stars.
His first stint came between 1978 and 1981, when he guided Ghana to the AFCON title in 1978.
After leaving, he returned in 1988 and later had further periods in charge, including spells in 1993, 2000 and 2001–02.
Sam Arday
Sam Arday also had two separate spells with the senior national team.
He first coached the Black Stars from 1996 to 1997 before returning in 2004.
Burkhard Ziese
German coach Burkhard Ziese also experienced a return to the Black Stars.
He first managed Ghana from 1990 to 1992, before returning to the job in 2003.
His second stint was brief, with the coach leaving after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2004 AFCON.
Kwesi Appiah
Kwesi Appiah became another Ghanaian coach to return to the Black Stars.
After initially taking charge in 2012, Appiah left the position in 2014.
He was appointed again in 2017 for a second spell.
Milovan Rajevac
Milovan Rajevac’s first spell remains one of the most memorable periods in Ghana’s recent football history.
The Serbian coach led the Black Stars between 2008 and 2010, taking Ghana to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup.
More than a decade later, he returned to the Black Stars in 2021 to lead them to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Otto Addo
Otto Addo is the most recent coach before Queiroz to make a second coming.
Addo initially took charge of Ghana in 2022, leading the team at the Qatar World Cup.
He subsequently returned to the position in 2024, beginning a second stint that eventually took him through Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
Carlos Queiroz
Now, Queiroz has joined that growing list.
His first Ghana mandate began in 2026 and included leading the Black Stars at the World Cup.
His mandate formally ended after the tournament, but rather than appointing a new coach, the GFA opted to bring him back for another phase.
The Portuguese therefore becomes the latest Black Stars coach to leave the job and return.
