GNFS reveals cause of accident that claimed 13 lives on Aflao Highway
The Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Divisional Officer Grade II (DO II), Ebenezer Yenzu, has disclosed that the fatal crash on the Accra-Aflao Highway at MotherKope occurred after a Ford Transit collided with a Toyota Hiace on a hill.
According to a report by graphic.com.gh, he said preliminary information indicates that the front of the Ford Transit crashed into the side of the Toyota HiAce as the Ford was ascending the hill while the HiAce was descending.
The crash, which occurred near God’s Love Herbal Clinic on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, claimed 13 lives and left 18 others injured.
The Toyota Hiace, with registration number GX 3186-20, was travelling from Accra towards Aflao, while the Ford Transit, with registration number GW 5558-23, was heading from Aflao towards Accra.
DO II Yenzu said the collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles, with the front and doors of the Hiace badly mangled and the Ford Transit severely wrecked.
Thirteen killed in Sege-Ada Highway crash
He added that the driver of the Hiace was among those injured.
The GNFS officer said firefighters from Sege received a distress call at 5:58 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 6:06 a.m. to begin rescue and extrication operations.
He said the firefighters removed victims trapped in the wreckage and transported all 18 injured persons to the Sege Polyclinic for medical attention.
Some of the injured were later referred to the Ada East District Hospital at FaithKope for further treatment.
After the rescue operation, the firefighters moved the wrecked vehicles to the side of the road, cleared debris and washed away blood from the highway, allowing traffic to resume.
