'I want posterity to remember' - Fiifi Coleman on remaking ‘I Told You So’
Movie director and actor Fiifi Coleman has detailed his main motive for recreating the classic Ghanaian stage play, 'I Told You So,' as a movie.
In a media interaction shared on social media, Fiifi Coleman noted that his decision to film the iconic stage play, which will premiere on March 6, 2027, is driven by his desire to ensure that the story is also told to future generations.
Fiifi Coleman further noted that money is not his ultimate goal for filming the movie.
According to the acclaimed actor, the movie, which was made in 1970 and will be recreated in 2027, will tell the same story while adding some unique Ghanaian features.

“My chief objective for doing this is to leave something for Ghanaian posterity. Posterity should come back and say, this is a Ghanaian movie that was shot in 1970, and then now in 2027, there is another one shot by Fiifi Coleman.
“It is the same story idea; it’s just to make sure that it keeps going. Production time, we’re looking at two and a half months,” he said.
Fiifi Coleman further detailed the challenges he faced during his road tour while taking the stage play I Told You So to other parts of Ghana.
“One of the challenges in the Central Region was accommodation. I have a crew of almost 100 people. Even if you have money to book the place, the place is not there for you to book.
“That’s the whole thing. It’s not there. So eventually, we had to - I think it was a student hostel; UCC had a hostel that we had to agree with, and then they hosted us. Even though they said the school was reopening, we had to be fixing the place; the students were coming back, and all of that. So, the challenges in Cape Coast specifically had to do with accommodation.”
Fiifi Coleman also advised movie producers who want to adopt a similar strategy of premiering movies or stage plays in other regions of the country to consider promoting their works through the local people.

According to him, he had to promote the I Told You So play through the local people during his tour in Cape Coast and Takoradi.
“For Takoradi and Cape Coast, one thing that was also observed is that all the regions have got the very conventional way of publicising your play and promoting it. You have to do the legwork.
“It’s not about: I put out a billboard, I do Joy FM small, I do all of those radio, and I’m set to go. No, it doesn’t work like that in those regions. You need to go into homes. You need to get into the ghettos. You need to get the area boys to come out and sit with them and have palm wine and talk about it. And it works like magic,” he added.
