Over 4 million fake, unregistered diapers seized across Ghana
More than four million pieces of fake unregistered and non-compliant baby diapers have been confiscated nationwide following a market surveillance exercise by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA).
The agencies say the exercise is part of efforts to protect children and consumers from potentially unsafe baby-care products being sold on the Ghanaian market.
According to a report by citinewsroom.com on September 8, 2026, Nana Prempeh Okogyeabour Aduhene, Executive Director in charge of Mediation and Arbitration at the CPA, disclosed that the seizures formed part of a nationwide campaign to remove baby diapers that do not meet regulatory requirements.
“The exercise is aimed at ensuring that products that do not meet the required regulatory standards are removed from the market,” the report said.
The campaign is targeting unregistered, unbranded and improperly labelled baby diapers, amid concerns about the safety and quality of products being sold to consumers.
The latest phase of the operation was conducted in parts of the Western Region, including Takoradi and Tarkwa, beginning on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Surveillance teams inspected shops and business premises and confiscated several quantities of unregistered and unbranded diapers, including fake diapers and other assorted products.
In Takoradi, 16 packs of unregistered fake diapers were seized from Kadiesoa Mothercare, while Akosua Ventures had 48 packs of assorted unbranded diapers confiscated. Another 180 packs were seized from El-Vitessa Enterprise.
At Diaper House, the team confiscated one bale of assorted unbranded diapers and 29 packs of unregistered fake diapers.
FDA seizes unregistered, suspected counterfeit diapers in Ho Market
R. Boys Everyday Needs had 29 packs of unbranded diapers seized, while 74 packs of assorted unbranded diapers were confiscated from Kari-J Essentials. King C Ventures also had 11 packs of unregistered fake diapers seized.
The operation was subsequently extended to Koma Oyie Enterprise in Takoradi and selected businesses in Tarkwa.
In Tarkwa, the team seized 16 packs of assorted unbranded diapers from Clevid Enterprise, 14 packs of unregistered fake diapers from Claxvis, 15 packs from Gladys Kwofie Anum Ventures and 80 packs of unbranded diapers from Brecom Enterprise.
The nationwide surveillance campaign has been ongoing since the beginning of the year, with the FDA and CPA conducting similar operations across several regions.
The agencies are expected to extend the exercise to the Bono Region and other parts of the country yet to be covered.
Authorities have warned businesses against stocking or selling baby-care products that have not been registered or do not comply with Ghana’s regulatory requirements.
The surveillance exercise is expected to continue through the end of the year as the authorities intensify efforts to remove non-compliant baby-care products from the Ghanaian market.
