‘Ghana’s 70 Slate will celebrate the country’s stories, history and identity’ - Shirley Frimpong
Sparrow Studios and OldFilm Productions have unveiled a three-film slate to commemorate Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary, with Shirley Frimpong Manso assuring that the productions will celebrate the country’s history, culture and identity.
Speaking at the unveiling of the 70 Slate project, Shirley said the productions will remain true to the long-standing mission of telling Ghanaian stories while spotlighting the country’s history, culture and people.
According to her, what sets the new slate apart is its connection to Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary and its emphasis on stories deeply rooted in the country’s identity.
“The focus has always been telling the Ghanaian story and also elevating the Ghanaian female. I think that has been very present in all our films. We’re actually linking it to Ghana’s seventieth anniversary and focusing on not just a fictional story but more to do with the Ghanaian community, the Ghanaianness,” she stated.
The three productions include Return of Makunsi, Nkrumah’s Red Gold Green, and a reimagining of the 1970 classic I Told You So.
Shirley revealed that Return of Makunsi will feature original music inspired by Jamestown, while Nkrumah’s Red Gold Green will tell a story about Ghana’s first President that she believes has not been explored before.
“For example, when it comes to Return of Makunsi, we’re gonna have a lot of Jamestown music… We are also looking at a story on Nkrumah which I believe has not been told yet,” she said.
She added that the scale of the productions will create jobs for hundreds of actors and crew members, with one scene in the Nkrumah film expected to feature about 500 extras.
“We are trying to bring back the cinema culture… We’re hoping that we’re opening up something that perhaps becomes the norm, where the film production companies can come together and we can do something on this kind of scale,” she said.
