Football administrator Eric Alagidede has called on Black Stars skipper Jordan Ayew to retire from the national team following inconsistent performances in recent matches.
He explained that the former Leicester City forward has not been impressive as captain of the national team, especially during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which led to massive backlash similar to what his brother Dede Ayew experienced in the past.
The former Great Olympics General Manager urged Jordan to heed public calls to step aside from the national team and instead focus on his club career after recently joining Championship side Sheffield United.

“I think he should call it quits on his international career and focus on club level. You see, our people are such that, at some point in time, they expect you to. I think it was the same way it happened with his elder brother. At some point, people felt he should call it quits, and he wasn’t doing it. Eventually, Otto Addo had to stop inviting him.
"Jordan didn’t have a great World Cup. He was one of the players who got criticized heavily, not only by Ghanaians but by people who watched the tournament. He failed to register a shot on target. He was our captain, our leading marksman, and all that,” he said in an interview with Sporty FM.
Alagidede also urged Jordan Ayew to learn from his father, Abedi Ayew Pele’s decision to retire from the Black Stars after a poor campaign in the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“They should take a cue from their father. At the time, Pelé was hanging up his boots after Burkina ’98; he still had a lot of football left in him. But Pelé said, ‘Look, I’ve had enough. I think I failed my generation. We could have done better. We didn’t do well. We exited at the group stage. I think it’s time for me to move on.’ And Pelé called it quits after Burkina ’98. He could have played in Ghana-Nigeria 2000 before retiring,” he added.
Jordan Ayew has joined Sheffield United on a one-year deal, with reports indicating that Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz has called him up for the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
