Ghana won't mine gold without bigger benefits for citizens – Minerals Commission

Ghana has made it clear that its estimated 3 trillion ounces of gold still underground will only be mined if the country secures meaningful economic benefits from the extraction of its mineral resources.

Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Tandoh, said Ghana was no longer interested in mining partnerships that primarily benefit investors without having a significant impact on the lives of Ghanaians.

He said the country was seeking strategic investors who could help transform its mineral wealth into jobs, skills, businesses and wider economic opportunities for Ghanaians.

Ghana moves to stop mining contractors from underpaying workers

He made the comments at the 2026 China Mining Conference, where Ghana presented its mineral resources and investment opportunities to international investors.

“Ghana still has about 3 trillion ounces of gold on the ground, and that is why we need the best of the best to partner to ensure that whatever we mine, every ounce coming from the ground actually makes an impact in the lives of the people,” he said.

Tandoh said this would form the basis for determining how Ghana’s remaining gold resources are developed.

“This is the only condition under which this estimated 3 trillion ounces would be mined,” he added.

The Minerals Commission CEO also assured potential investors that Ghana remained open for business, pointing to what he described as a stable investment environment and a transparent mining licensing system.

He said investors were protected by Ghanaian laws and had security of tenure over their mining rights, including protection against the seizure of their property.

“There is security of tenure over mining titles, with the right to pledge and alienate them freely. There is also a transparent application process that ensures a first-come, first-served procedure,” he said.

However, Tandoh stressed that investment in Ghana’s mining sector must go beyond extracting gold and exporting it.

He said the new approach was focused on creating win-win partnerships in which investors receive fair returns while Ghana benefits from increased economic value, employment, skills development and improved livelihoods.
