The story behind the Cadillac John F Kennedy gifted Dr Kwame Nkrumah
A Cadillac gifted to Ghana's first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has become one of the most notable historical items preserved at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.
The iconic car remains a powerful artefact and carries a story dating back more than six decades to a period of intense Cold War rivalry between the United States-led Western bloc and the Soviet Union-led Eastern bloc.
The luxury vehicle was manufactured by General Motors in the United States and later modified with additional security features.
According to the Executive Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Dr Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, the vehicle was presented to Dr Nkrumah following his visit to President Kennedy after his inauguration in March 1961.
He explained that President Kennedy's gift of the Cadillac was therefore part of efforts to build closer relations with Dr Nkrumah.
“This is actually a symbol of the politics of the Cold War. So, the politics of the time was intense between the West and the East. But when he visited, of course, President John F Kennedy wanted him to be on the West side. And so, he tried to use this Cadillac as symbol, of course, it's not enough for a car to be used to get Kwame Nkrumah on his side, but it represented an extraordinary attempt to be cordial and to build rapport with Dr Nkrumah
“You find a beautiful woman, you're trying to woo her to your side, you give her gifts. And this was essentially what it was in 1961," Dr Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh stated in a JoyNews interview on September 21, 2026.

The gift came at a significant point in Ghana’s foreign policy.
Ghana had become a republic in July 1960, giving Dr Nkrumah full responsibility for the country’s foreign policy rather than leaving that responsibility with the British monarch.
Dr Nuyonami said this placed Ghana at the centre of the diplomatic competition between the Western and Eastern blocs.
“Dr Kwame Nkrumah assumed full powers and full responsibility for Ghana's foreign policy, no longer the Queen,” he said.
The choice of a Cadillac was also significant because the American luxury vehicle represented the country's automobile technology and industrial capacity at the time.
“Cadillac also represented the finest of American automobile technology of the period,” he stated.
The memorial park is now considering giving visitors an opportunity to experience the historic vehicle more closely.
Dr Nunyonameh said the facility is conducting a technical assessment to determine whether the Cadillac can safely be opened to visitors for photographs and limited access while still ensuring its preservation.
