‘Nobody touched my private part’ – Mzbel recounts 2005 KNUST incident
Ghanaian musician Mzbel has opened up about the controversial incident that occurred during a performance at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 2005, insisting that she was never raped.
Narrating vividly what happened that night during an interview with Kafui Dey, Mzbel disclosed that the incident occurred while she was performing on stage and the audience repeatedly called for her to continue after her scheduled performance.
According to Mzbel, she eventually decided to leave the stage because other artistes, including Castro and Praye, were waiting backstage to perform.
“I was on stage performing and after I was done, the crowd kept shouting last one, then I will start the performance again. The fourth time, I said no because Castro, Praye and other artistes were backstage,” she recounted.
Mzbel mentioned that she told the audience that she would return after the other artistes had performed and party with them until the following day.
However, she said, as she was leaving the stage, an unidentified person grabbed her leg and pulled her towards the crowd.
“As I was getting down from the stage, someone grabbed my leg and started pulling me into the crowd. There was a pool there, I was screaming and before I realised, I passed out,” she shared.

The musician strongly disputed claims that she was raped during the incident, explaining that there were many people around and she was wearing a pair of leggings.
“It’s not possible for anyone to rape me because there were a lot of people and I was wearing leggings. There was never rape; nobody touched my private part,” she stated.
Mzbel added that she did not see the incident as something deliberately orchestrated to cause her harm.
“I saw it as an accident, so it didn’t cause me any pain. I don’t think anyone deliberately came to the event centre to cause me pain,” she noted.
She said the incident has repeatedly been brought up by critics whenever she expresses opinions they disagree with, but she no longer allows it to affect her.
“What happened in KNUST, 2005 doesn’t really bother me. People think that incident is something that is supposed to break me, so anytime they have issues with me, they bring it up.
“They will be saying I’m the one who went to KNUST and they raped me. It’s a human being that gets raped. I’m a human being and it’s not by choice,” she stated.
She further urged people not to use the incident as a means of bullying her or attempting to undermine her whenever they disagree with her views.
“If they see it as something that they have to bully me with, that I was raped, it doesn’t really bother me,” she added.
