Public transport fares to increase by 8% from September 26
Public transport fares across Ghana will increase by 8% from Saturday, September 26, 2026.
The increase follows an agreement between the government and transport unions after weeks of discussions over the 2026 fare review.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) had initially proposed a 30% increase.
The unions cited rising fuel prices, spare parts, vehicle maintenance and other operating costs.
At a meeting with the Ministry of Transport on September 8, the unions presented their proposal while the government outlined measures to support transport operators, including a GH¢2 per litre intervention on diesel.
A joint team made up of the Ministry, GPRTU and GRTCC was then formed to review the cost of operating commercial transport.
The GPRTU had earlier insisted that negotiations over the proposed 30% increase were still ongoing.
Its Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, said: “There has never been any agreement with the government that we are suspending our proposed increment.”
He also said the union was pushing for the 30% increase but could negotiate.
“We are pushing for 30% increment. That is what was on the table at the last Friday negotiation,” he said.
The latest agreement means commuters will begin paying the revised fares on September 26.
The 8% increase will affect trotros, shared taxis and other commercial public transport services.
The new fares will be applied according to the fare structure agreed by the government and transport operators.
