Two arrested after allegedly offering police commander GH¢30k in exchange for narcotics
Mark Bangel, a trader from Kpandai in the Oti Region, and Zakaria Arafat, a mechanic from Kpando in the Volta Region, have been arrested after allegedly attempting to bribe a police commander with GH¢30,000 to secure the release of a truck and suspected narcotic substances.
The two suspects were arrested by the Greater Accra Police Command during investigations into the alleged transportation and distribution of suspected narcotic drugs in Accra, according to a citinewsroom.com report on September 22, 2026.
According to the police, the case began on Friday, September 11, 2026, when officers of the Bravo SWAT Unit, acting on intelligence, intercepted a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GN 5581-13 at Abofu, near Achimota.
The truck was reportedly travelling from Kpandai and was suspected of transporting suspected narcotic substances into Accra.
The occupants allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled after spotting the police.
A search of the truck subsequently uncovered 175 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The suspected substances were allegedly concealed in three sacks and three “Ghana Must Go” bags.
The truck and the recovered exhibits were taken to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Police said Bangel and Arafat later reported to the Regional Police Headquarters, claiming ownership of the truck and the recovered substances.
Investigators alleged that the two men subsequently attempted to influence the Bravo SWAT Unit Commander by offering him GH¢30,000 in exchange for the release of the vehicle and the suspected narcotics.
The police said the two suspects were immediately arrested and the alleged bribe money was retrieved.

Further investigations have reportedly linked a third person, identified only as Salam, to the operation. According to the police, Salam allegedly drove the truck and the suspected narcotic substances from Kpandai to Accra.
The police said efforts are underway to locate and arrest Salam.
